Fiat: Driven by passion

FIAT, or "Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino," is an Italian automobile manufacturer that was formed 120 years ago in Turin. It currently leads the FIAT Chrysler Automobiles OEM group, which includes Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM, and Alfa Romeo. FIAT's lone new vehicle in the US is the 500X crossover, replacing the 124 Spider convertible and 500L wagon for the 2021 model year. The company is known for its unique design and customization choices, with Mini being its most notable competitor. FIAT has expanded its influence by building plants in several countries since its inception in 1908. In 2014, FIAT and the Chrysler Automotive Group merged, forming FIAT Chrysler Automobiles, which manufactures the FIAT 500. This merger has significantly increased FIAT's international impact, making it a household name. Today's FIAT vehicles are known for their elegant yet small, agile designs.

FIAT 500X

Starting from $29,505

The 2023 500X is still available in America, despite the Fiat 500 minicar and 500L station wagon having discreetly exited the market. This is probably because it is the only resurrected vehicle from the Italian manufacturer that resembles an SUV. Never mind that it has almost no off-road ability while having the same foundations as the surprisingly good Jeep Renegade. Despite having just mediocre fuel efficiency, the 500X is still a better car for commuting. It has a soft top that is semi-convertible, a four-cylinder engine with 177 horsepower, and all-wheel drive as standard. Though all of those smaller competitors are more pleasant to drive, the 500X stands out from more traditionally styled compact SUVs like the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30 thanks to its endearing retro appearance. A few of them are also more useful, given how little the 2023 500X can be used because of its small cargo box and thin back seats.

Despite its bold style, the 2023 Fiat 500X is not up to par in most aspects. The 500X has a tiny load capacity, poor driving dynamics, and a clunky transmission, but it also features nice interior materials and an easy-to-use infotainment system.

FIAT 124 Spider

Starting at $21,888

In the sports vehicle class, the Fiat 124 Spider is ranked rather lower. It boasts excellent fuel efficiency, well-rounded handling, and a high-quality cabin, but it also has a small trunk and cramped seats.
