2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Overview

Introducing the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale, which aims to bring some Italian flair to the competitive subcompact luxury crossover market. Alfa Romeo's characteristic sharp-nosed face accentuates the Tonale's flowing bodywork, which is guaranteed to draw admiring glances. The Tonale lacks the same sense of security on a winding road as its brothers, the Giulia and Stelvio, despite having a completely independent suspension and optional adaptive dampers. A 285-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain with standard all-wheel drive and an expected all-electric range of over 30 miles provides the power. This will put the 2024 Tonale in a class with the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA250, and Volvo XC40 as uncommon plug-in hybrid options.

Cost and Selection of Items for Purchase

Depending on the trim and extras, the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale might cost anywhere from $45,440 to $50,435 in total. We'd be conservative and choose the mid-range Ti trim because the Tonale already starts at a somewhat higher price than the majority of its competitors. Additional features of the Ti include ambient inside lighting, a power-operated rear liftgate, wireless smartphone charging, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Performance, Engine, and Transmission

All-wheel drive and a single powerplant are available options for the Tonale. A 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor situated on the back axle of the plug-in hybrid produce a combined 285 horsepower. The 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and six-speed automatic transmission that Alfa equips the plug-in Tonale with are expected to deliver it a driving range of more than 30 miles on electricity alone. A completely independent suspension system powers every model; adaptive dampers are an add-on. We found the Tonale's road manners to be a tad lacking on our initial test drive. Because the Giulia and Stelvio are more engaging than the Tonale, Alfa's other vehicles meet higher standards. For us, the steering is too detached from the road and our body language aren't kept under control enough, which causes some unintentional rolling through corners. Although the plug-in hybrid powertrain has sufficient around-town power, it loses acceleration as the Tonale approaches its maximum speed. The plug-in hybrid powertrain accelerated the Tonale to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds on our test course. At least on the top-spec Veloce we drove, which has Brembo hardware, braking performance is superb. However, we found that the handoff between regenerative and friction braking is rough and difficult to control smoothly.

Battery life, charging time, and range

Under the floor of the Tonale is a 14.8-kWh battery pack that can propel the compact SUV 33 miles on electricity alone. We were only able to go 32 miles on our 75 mph interstate fuel economy test route before the gas engine started up. Recharging the battery pack at home using a 240-volt connector will take around 2.5 hours.

Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

Inside, the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan and the Stelvio SUV are evidently the source of the circular air vents and the driver-centric dashboard arrangement. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a three-spoke steering wheel with a contemporary design complete the dash. There are also two well-known paddle shifters available. Microsuede and leather surfaces are combined with aluminum trim to create the interior design. The front seats are rather elegant, with Alfa Romeo crests on the headrests and red contrast stitching, although they lack support for the thighs and shoulders. The Tonale's interior is generally more premium and authentically Alfa in appearance and feel.

Connectivity and Entertainment

An infotainment system with a 10.3-inch touchscreen is standard on every Tonale. It is equipped with Uconnect 5, software that is common to many other Stellantis models. It has many adjustable interfaces with up to five distinct user profiles in addition to a customized home screen.

features for Safety and Driver Assistance

  • Regular lane-keeping assistance and lane-departure warning
  • Standard rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitor
  • 360-degree camera system available

Coverage for Maintenance and Warranty

Although Alfa Romeo has a bad reputation for its unreliability, the Tonale has mediocre warranty coverage.

  • A limited warranty is valid for 50,000 miles or four years.
  • Four years or 50,000 miles are covered by the powertrain warranty.
  • Free maintenance is available for a year or 10,000 kilometers.
