2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Overview

Because full-size pickup trucks are the Taylor Swift concert of new car sales in the United States, people will do practically everything to acquire a full-size truck. With a full-electric twist, the Ford F-150 Lightning incorporates knowledge from the decades of best-selling F-series trucks that came before it. The Lightning joins the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV SUT, and, ultimately, the Chevy Silverado EV lineup. Its silent, quick-twitch electric powerplant, capable of producing up to 580 horsepower, replaces the traditional V-8 scream. All Lightning have dual-motor all-wheel drive, but the Extended Range model's bigger battery allows it to reach an EPA-estimated maximum driving range of 320 miles. Pretty about whatever the gas-powered F-150 can accomplish, the Lightning can too.

What Is 2024 Bringing?

Though it hasn't changed all that much since its two-year premiere, the 2024 F-150 Lightning does gain some new hardware. The Platinum Black special version is new for 2024 and attempts to go full Batman by wrapping the Lightning in a matte-black wrap and adding dark 22-inch wheels, a dark grille, and dark badging. Measuring $93,290 at launch, there will only be 2000 units constructed. There is now a new Flash trim in the selection. With the largest battery pack, 15.5-inch touchscreen screen, and Ford's Blue Cruise hands-free driving mode, the Flash has all of the greatest features of the Lightning in a more reasonably priced vehicle. Updated BlueCruise 1.2 hands-free driving assistance and keyless entry are available for the remaining F-150 Lightning models. The vehicle no longer has to be fully switched on for the ProPower onboard generator to activate when you unlock it. The 2022 and 2023 F-150 Lightnings will likewise receive these modifications as over-the-air software upgrades.

Cost and Selection of Items for Purchase

Depending on the model and extras, the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning can cost anywhere from $57,090 to $100,090.

EV Performance, Power, and Motor

All-wheel drive and two electric motors are standard on all F-150 Lightning versions. The motors' combined power output is 452 horsepower when using the Standard-Range battery, and 580 horsepower while using the Extended-Range battery. In both cases, the maximum torque is an astounding 775 pound-feet. For a vehicle this size, performance is remarkable. The Lightning Platinum we tested completed a quarter-mile at 107 mph in 12.7 seconds and hit 60 mph in a just 4.0 seconds. We were thrilled not just with the Lightning's lightning-fast acceleration, but also with its ability to retain the standard F-150's classy driving qualities. Thanks to a lower center of gravity, the Lightning's ride and handling are actually a little more pleasant.

Capacity for Payload and Towing

Although the production model's stated maximum towing capacity is just 10,000 pounds, only vehicles equipped with the optional Extended-Range battery can achieve such feats. The maximum capacity for Standard-Range battery versions is 7700 pounds. The Standard-Range model has a payload capacity of up to 2000 pounds, while the Extended-Range variant has a payload capacity of just 1800 pounds. In our tow test, our Lightning Platinum's range decreased to barely 100 miles at 70 mph while towing a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer—200 miles less than its unladen EPA rating.

Ability to Tow and Payload

The advertised maximum towing capability of the standard model is merely 10,000 pounds, but only cars with the optional Extended-Range battery can accomplish such feats. For Standard-Range battery variants, the maximum capacity is 7700 pounds. The Extended-Range model can only carry 1800 pounds in payload, compared to 2000 pounds for the Standard-Range model. 200 miles less than its EPA-rated unladen range, our Lightning Platinum's pulling a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer reduced its range to a meager 100 miles at 70 mph during our tow test.

Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

Similar to the truck's appearance, the F-150 Lightning's interior is largely similar to that of the F-150 fueled by gasoline, with a few notable variations including a roomy cargo space in the front trunk and an extra-large touchscreen display. The F-150 Lightning is only available as a crew cab with a bed length of 5.5 feet. Speaking of spacious, the F-150 Lightning has a big front trunk (frunk) that can accommodate additional goods weighing up to 400 pounds by using the area that would normally house the engine of the regular F-150.

Connectivity and Entertainment

Although the Lariat and Platinum versions have an even larger 15.5-inch display, the base infotainment system is a 12.0-inch touchscreen with Ford's most recent Sync 4 software. Standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, in-dash navigation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Ford will offer two distinct optional premium sound systems—one with eight speakers in the Lariat and one with eight speakers in the Platinum—by utilizing its collaboration with Bang & Olufsen.

Features for Safety and Driver Assistance

Many driver-assistance systems are standard, and Ford's new semi-autonomous BlueCruise driving mode is available as an add-on. Visit the websites of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for further details on the F-150 Lightning's crash test results. Important safety characteristics consist of:

  • Typical automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians
  • Normal lane-departure alert with assistance for lane-keeping
  • Adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode is available.

Guarantee and Upkeep Reportage

In addition to the Ford standard warranty, the F-150 Lightning comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile coverage for electric vehicle components. This extra guarantee is comparable to that of other EV competitors.

  • The three-year or three6,000-mile limited warranty
  • Five years or 60,000 miles are covered by the powertrain warranty.
  • The battery components are covered by an 8-year or 100,000-mile guarantee.
  • No free planned maintenance
